Now that our early developments are operating assets, our work has shifted from breaking ground to keeping them performing — and from arranging finance once to managing risk, capital and carbon value for as long as the asset runs.
We finance and operate clean-energy assets on behalf of specific clients. Behind-the-meter supply gives clients lower-cost, lower-carbon energy without the operational burden — Hedmenn Strauss manages the delivery, so clients can stay focused on their core business.
We manage our industrial and C&I solar PV portfolio on an ongoing basis — tracking performance, overseeing O&M contractors, and optimising each asset to protect its long-term revenue and value.
For assets already in our portfolio, we optimise the equity and debt behind them, register and monetise carbon credits under South Africa's Carbon Tax framework, and arrange the insurance brokerage that protects both the asset and its operations.
We help clients originate and trade Verra-verified Carbon Tax Offsets, and advise on PPA structures and renewable-energy derivatives — for a South African energy transition market now worth an estimated R500 billion and growing.
South Africa’s renewable energy derivatives market — covering interest rate, currency, PPA, carbon credit and commodity hedges tied to these projects — is estimated at R47–R102bn in notional value, growing 15–20% a year.
South African entities exposed to Carbon Tax can offset part of their liability with verified carbon credits. We manage that process end to end:
Identify & contract
We identify and contract the carbon credit project alongside our project partners.
Validate & register
Independent validation and registration under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).
Implement & monitor
The project is implemented, with emission reductions monitored and independently verified.
Issue
Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) are issued once the emission reductions are confirmed.
List & trade
Credits are listed as Carbon Tax Offsets (CTOs) on the Carbon Offset Administration System (COAS) and traded to Carbon Tax-liable South African entities.
Retire
The buyer retires the CTO against their Carbon Tax obligation, backed by a Letter of Authorisation.
